COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Fresh from its final-round rally last week at the Rutherford Intercollegiate tournament, the University of Maryland men's golf team on Monday earned an invitation to the 2005 NCAA East Regional Tournament.
The East Regional will be held May 19 to 21 at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville. The tournament, one of three regionals across the country, will be hosted by the Southeastern Conference. There were 27 teams selected on Monday for each of the three regionals.
The 2005 berth is the fourth in four years for the Terps' program. Maryland placed 20th at the East Regional a year ago. With the new invitation, the Terrapins will have been to five regional tournaments in the last six seasons and six times in Head Coach Tom Hanna's 14 years at his alma mater.
"I'm happy to get another bid this year, because we're really young and I didn't expect it this season," said Hanna. "You never know with a young team, but they've worked really hard, especially this spring."
Maryland has been led all season by junior John Eades, who recently fired a 16-under-par total of 200 to win the individual title at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, held at Penn State. Eades, who finished with a 64 in the final round, led the Terps past four teams on the final day, as Maryland's second-place finish as a team helped secure their place in the NCAA Regional.
"John winning at Penn State and Princeton carried the load for us," said Hanna. "We needed to beat Towson, Rutgers and Princeton at the Rutherford, and John helped us do that. We're fortunate, the fact that we're young will give us some experience down the road. The team we'll be taking to this tournament seems to be showing some consistency. This team is capable of taking the next step."
The top 10 teams from each regional earn berths to the national tournament at Caves Valley Golf Course in Baltimore. The NCAA Division I National will be held June 1 through 4.
