Maryland Gymnastics Falls to Defending NCAA National Champions

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 2 Georgia Gym Dogs defeated the No. 19 Maryland Terrapins Saturday, 195.825 to 188.300. The Terps are now 1-1 this season.

Maryland started the meet on uneven bars. Rachel Martinez and Mandy Pascual led the Terps on the event, tying for seventh overall with a 9.725. Rachel Colon added a 9.675 and Angie Ferg posted a 9.625. Maryland totaled a season-high 47.975 on uneven bars. Georgia freshman and former Olympian Courtney Kupets finished first with a 9.950.

The Terps moved to vault on the next rotation. Colon scored a team-high 9.625 and finished sixth overall. Martinez notched a 9.550 for seventh place overall and Ginny Scott added a 9.525 for eighth place. Maryland totaled 46.575 on vault. Tiffany Tolnay won the event for Georgia with a 9.90.

Maryland rotated to floor exercise for the third rotation. Martinez led the Terps on this event with a 9.675. She finished seventh overall. Scott notched a 9.625 and Colon added a 9.575 for eighth and ninth place. The Terps totaled 46.450 on floor exercise. Kupets finished first for Georgia with a 9.90.

The Terps moved to balance beam for the fourth and final rotation. Colon scored a 9.70 and finished fifth overall. Ferg posted a 9.675 and Martinez added a 9.650 to finish sixth and seventh overall. Maryland totaled a season-high 47.30 on balance beam. Tolnay won the event for Georgia with a 9.90. Martinez scored a 38.60 and finished third in the all-around and Colon notched a 38.575 for fourth place in the all-around. Kupets won the all-around for Georgia with a 39.475.

Maryland had to compete without freshman Kim Loew who was injured in its season opener against James Madison. Loew was a vital part of the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise lineups. Despite that, Maryland improved its scores this week on uneven bars and balance beam.

The Terps will travel to Illinois, Saturday, January 21 at 7:00p.m. Their next home meet will be on February 4 at 7:00p.m. They host the Governor's Cup with Towson, North Carolina and NC State.
