COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Dual-threat quarterback Josh Portis (Woodland Hills, Calif.) has enrolled in classes at the University of Maryland and will participate in spring drills when the Terps hit the practice fields in April. Portis, who spent his true freshman season at Florida, will be eligible to compete in the 2007 season.
The 6-4, 210 pound sophomore was the backup to three-year starter Chris Leak in Gainesville this past season, completing 6-of-11 passes for 81 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. He was also the Gators' fourth-leading rusher with 163 yards on 24 carries despite playing in just six games.
The cousin of Redskins' star running back Clinton Portis, Josh Portis' most impressive effort of 2005 may have been in the offseason. Starting for the Blue team, he completed 20-of-30 pass attempts for 253 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in Florida's annual spring game.
A native of Woodland Hills, California, Portis threw for 2,294 yards and 36 touchdowns with only seven interceptions and was named an all-state selection in his senior season at William Howard Taft High School.
