The Maryland Gymnastics team defeated James Madison in its season opener, 189.300 to 177.750. The Terps swept the Dukes on all four events.
Angie Ferg led the Terps on vault, tying a career high 9.825. Rachel Martinez finished second overall, with a 9.775. Alex Gatch notched a 9.725 to finish third overall in her debut on vault. Gretchen Kittelberger and Ginny Scott added a 9.625, for fourth place overall. Rachel Colon finished sixth overall with a 9.550. Maryland tallied a 48.575 team total on vault which was its best event of the evening.
Martinez finished first overall on uneven bars with a 9.750. Gatch followed in second place with a 9.600. Scott added a 9.575 for third place. Mandy Pascual notched a 9.225 for fourth place overall. The Terps tallied 47.200 on uneven bars to win that event.
Gatch paced Maryland on balance beam with a score of 9.575 and a first place finish overall. Martinez totaled a 9.525 for second place overall. Freshman Kim Loew notched a 9.450 for third place overall in her debut as a Terp. Maryland scored a team total of 46.550 on beam for the win on that event.
Martinez performed the best routine of the evening, with a 9.875 on floor exercise. Scott finished second overall in that event with a 9.750. Angie Ferg added a 9.525 for third place overall. The Terps totaled 46.975 on floor exercise, giving them the sweep on all four events.
Martinez finished first in the all-around competition with a 38.925. Alex Gatch and Rachel Colon competed all-around for the first time in their careers, adding a 37.675 and 36.550 to finish in second and third place.
Maryland takes on the defending National Champion Georgia Gym Dogs, Saturday, January 14 at 4 p.m. The Terps next home meet will be the Governor's Cup on Saturday, Feb 4 at 7 p.m.
