Andrew Copelan has been promoted to offensive coordinator of the University of Maryland men's lacrosse program, head coach Dave Cottle announced today.
"Coach Copelan has certainly earned this and I very pleased to give him this opportunity," said Cottle. "Andy realizes with graduating four All-Americans that this is a challenge, but it is a challenge that he has accepted and embraced."
Copelan joined the Terrapin coaching staff last November and was instrumental in helping lead Maryland to the 2006 NCAA Final Four. Seven Terps earned All-America recognition in 2006, including Joe Walters, who was awarded the Turnbull Award as the nation's most outstanding attackman.
Prior to coming to Maryland, Copelan served as the head coach at Marist College for two seasons and was also the Director of Intramural and Club Sports.
In 2004 Copelan, as the interim head coach, was named MAAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Red Foxes to the MAAC regular-season, finishing the year 10-7 and 8-0 in conference play. It was the best season for the Red Foxes since 1988 and the most wins since 1986. Copelan. In 2005 he led the Red Foxes to the MAAC Tournament title and Marist's first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Copelan was a four-year starter at Bucknell University. As a midfielder, Copelan helped lead the Bison to four consecutive Patriot League titles, and the program's first-ever NCAA berth in 2001. As a senior he earned All-Patriot League accolades, and was a four-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for Student Athletes.
