As part of the homecoming festivities at Northern Illinois University, NIU's Centennial Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will be held today and Maryland swimming and diving assistant coach, Jarod Schroeder will be honored. Schroeder's fellow 2006 NIU Hall of Fame inductees include former softball pitcher Laurie Miller (Class of `85), and former football player Hollis Thomas (Class of '95).
Schroeder is noted as one of the most renowned swimmers in NIU history. During his career, he had much national and international experience. At NIU, he served as team captain for two years and was named Illinois Collegiate Swimmer of the Year twice. He was also named Mid-America Conference Swimmer of the Year three times, earned seven individual conference titles, and posted three conference records. He swam in the 1998 Goodwill Games and 1999 Pan Am Games as a member of the U.S. National team. As a co-captain of the U.S. team at the Pan Am Games, he won two silver medals.
In his first season as assistant coach for the Terps, Schroeder brings a plethora of knowledge and coaching experience to the program. Upon graduating NIU in 1995, Schroeder worked as a volunteer assistant coach at both NIU and the University of Wisconsin. Schroeder served as an assistant coach for the top-25 swimming and diving program at Northwestern since 2000. Schroeder also maintained a head coaching position for the New Trier Swim Club in Winnetka, Illinois beginning in 2002. He has trained several Olympic Trials qualifiers, NCAA qualifiers, and U.S. National Finalists.
Concerning his assistant coaching position at Maryland, Schroeder looks forward to working among a "young staff with a lot of National Team experience." In doing so, he anticipates helping "bring Maryland swimming and diving to national prominence."
The NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet is set to begin at 7:00 pm this evening in the Duke Ellington Ballroom at NIU's Leslie Holmes Student Center.
