Maryland Swimming and Diving Hosts Terrapin Cup Invitational

University of Maryland swimming and diving will return to action this weekend, hosting the Terrapin Cup Invitational Thursday, November 16 through Saturday, November 18 at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium. Last season, NC State won the Terp Cup and will be returning this weekend. The Maryland women's team finished in fifth place at the 2005 Invitational.

The Terps will welcome fourteen visiting teams on the women's side. In addition to Maryland, the participating women's teams will include: University of Connecticut, West Chester University, College of William and Mary, West Virginia University, NC State University, Drexel University, Colgate University, Naval Academy, Yale University, University of Mary Washington, Kansas University, James Madison University, University of Richmond and Villanova.

Preliminary events will begin each day at 10:00 am (diving prelims will begin at 1:00 pm) and finals will follow each evening at 6:30 pm. Thursday's events will include: 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1 meter diving, and 400 medley relay.

Friday's events will consist of: 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3 meter diving (women's), and 800 freestyle relay.

Finally, on Saturday will be: 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3 meter diving (men's), and 400 freestyle relay.

The meet can be followed throughout the weekend on the University of Maryland swimming and diving website with Live Scoring linked to the Terrapin Cup Invitational in the 2006-07 schedule.

Last time for the Terps (against Duke and NC State):

-Maryland was victorious over Duke (155-132) and NC State (171-119).

-The women opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay winning the event with a 1:46.99. The Terps also won the 200 free relay with an NCAA B cut time of 1:33.00.

-Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) took first in the 50 free (24.06) followed by junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) in second (24.46). Skalinskaya went on to also win the 100 free (51.64).

-Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the way in the 1000 free, taking first place with a time of 10:13.67. Lehner also took the 200 free with an NCAA B cut time of 1:49.65 and junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) finished in third place (1:55.28). Lehner picked up her third win of the day in the 500 free (5:00.01) with Jones in third.

-Freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Terps in the 100 back in second place (58.01) followed by Ferdinand who came in third (59.48). Davidson went on to place second in the 200 back (2:07.54).

-Maryland swept the 200 fly with freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) placing first (2:03.54), freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) in second (2:05.78), and freshman Patty DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) placing fourth in the event (2:07.59). Rossi went on to swim to her second first-place finish of the day in the 200 IM (2:08.35) followed by Jones in sixth.

-In the 100 breast, junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) swam to a second-place finish (1:07.15) and Rossi swam to a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:21.34).
