
Maryland is in Eighth Place After Day One of Terp Cup

The Maryland men's swimming and diving team completed the first day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational tonight with finals in the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, men's 1 meter diving, and women's 3 meter diving. The 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay also took place this evening. The Maryland men's team is currently in eighth place. West Virginia leads the way on the men's side with NC State and University of Connecticut in second and third respectively.
Finals opened with the 200 freestyle relay. On the men's side, the relay team of sophomore Dong Kim (Buck Co., Pa.), senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.), sophomore Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.) and junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.) came in sixth place (1:24.26).
Seniors Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) and Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) swam in the finals for the 200 IM. Miller placed 20th (1:56.85) and Shepard came in 22nd (1:57.33). Gray came in fifth place in the 50 free (20.66) which ties his season best.
The night ended with the 400 medley relay. Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.), Shepard, Weinert, and Gray were the top finishers for the Terps, coming in 16th place (3:30.41).
The second day of competition will begin tomorrow morning at 10:00 am with the preliminary session of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and women's 1 meter diving. Finals for these events will follow at 6:30 pm.
