ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior Charlie Pinto won at 141 pounds to help the Maryland wrestling team to a sixth place finish (71 points) at the Body Bar Systems Invitational on November 18 at Cornell. Pinto battled sophomore Alex Krom in the finals of the 141 pound division. Senior Jason Kiessling and freshman Mike Letts both finished third at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, and redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor placed fourth at 197.

Cornell won the tournament with 115 points, barely topping Michigan which totaled 114 points. Pittsburgh came in third with 98.5 points.

In the 141 bracket, both Pinto and Krom won their first three matches to set up the all Maryland final. Pinto defeated Lief Gilsdorf of Army, 10-2, and then beat Joe Ciampoli of Pitt, 10-5. In the semifinals, Pinto pinned Keith Dickey of Cornell, ranked No. 18 in the country, in 4:52. Krom pinned Michigan's Brad Cusumano and then beat Corey Mason of Cornell 13-5. Krom then knocked off the top-seeded Ryan Williams of Old Dominion, 8-5.

In the final between third-seeded Pinto and Krom, Pinto narrowly won, 5-3, to take the crown.

Kiessling, seeded third in the 165 bracket, won his first two matches on the day, 9-3 and 8-2, before losing 4-1. He rebounded, however, and won 9-7 against fourth-seeded Mike Mackie of Cornell to reach the third-place match. Kiessling then topped fifth-seeded Sherwood Fendryk, 10-5.

Letts began the 174 pound weight class by upsetting third-seeded Nick Kozar of Drexel, 6-3 and then sailing past Army's Ryan Mergen, 14-2. Letts then lost to second-seeded Keith Gavin. In the consolation bracket, he got the best of Kozar again, 6-3, and then edged Aaron Miller of Kent State, 6-5, to take third. Miller is ranked 18th in the nation at 174 pounds.

Taylor went into the 197 bracket seeded second and cruised by Kevin Fox of Sacred Heart with a technical fall in 4:30. Taylor lost to third-seeded Casey White of Michigan, but then beat fourth-seeded Jon Oplinger of Drexel in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match. Taylor lost to Nick Roy of Michigan, 6-4, to finish fourth.

The Terps will host their first home event of the 2006-07 season when No. 18 Nebraska comes to the Comcast Pavilion on Saturday, November 25 at 4:00 p.m.
