COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team lost to No. 18 Nebraska, 27-12, on November 25 in front of a capacity crowd at the Comcast Center Pavilion. Senior Jason Kiessling, redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor, and freshman Mike Letts each came up with wins for the Terrapins.
Kiessling improved his record this season to 9-3 and 5-2 in duals. Taylor is now 8-3 and 6-1 in duals and has a team-best four falls this season. Letts recorded his team-high 10th win of the season and is also now 6-1 in dual action.
In the first match of the afternoon at 133, freshman Jon Kohler gave Mike Rowe all he could handle before losing by decision. Rowe took a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, but Kohler came up with an escape and a reversal to cut the deficit to one. Rowe quickly responded with a reversal of his own. Kohler managed to get out of another hold, making the score 6-4 at the end of two. The third period started with a Kohler escape to make it 6-5, but that is as close as he would get as Rowe used a pair of takedowns to win, 10-5.
At 141, junior Charlie Pinto had a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period but No. 16 Dominick Moyer held him scoreless the rest of the way to win by decision, 7-3.
The 149-pound match was the most closely contested of the day between junior Andrew Schlaffer and No. 10 Robert Sanders. The two were scoreless after one and Sanders managed a reversal in the second for a 2-0 lead heading into the third. Schlaffer recorded a takedown 30 seconds into the final session to tie it, 2-2, but Sanders escaped 10 seconds later and took Schlaffer down with 30 seconds left to make it 5-2. With 10 seconds on the clock, Schlaffer escaped the grasp of Sanders and then notched a takedown with five seconds left to make it 5-5 as time expired in the match. Sanders was awarded the win, however, with just over a minute of riding time.
After the Cornhuskers won at 157 to take a 13-0 lead, Kiessling notched the first win for the Terps at 165. Kiessling and No. 12 Marc Harwood were deadlocked, 3-3, at the end of the first period. Harwood managed an escape in the second after Kiessling rode him for 1:05 to make it 4-3 in his favor. Kiessling recorded a takedown that Harwood quickly escaped from, tying it again at 5-5. With 45 seconds left in the second, Kiessling took him down again to take a lead he would not relinquish. Kiessling went on to win by decision, 10-6.
Letts followed suit at 174 with a decision of his own, 3-1. Letts recorded a takedown with 36 seconds left in the first period to take the 2-0 lead. The only other scoring in the match was an escape by both sides, giving Letts the victory.
After Levi Wofford won by fall at 184 pounds to give the Huskers a 19-6 lead, Taylor responded with a fall of his own to get the Terrapins back in the match. In the first period, Taylor took down Nick Schaefer but hurt himself in the process. After a short break, Taylor took advantage and pinned Schaefer in 1:51 cutting the deficit to 19-12.
Nebraska (2-0) won the last two matches at heavyweight and 125 pounds to secure the 27-12 win. Jon May won at heavyweight, 3-0, and then No. 6 Paul Donahoe won by technical fall in 5:51.
The Terps (4-3) are back in action on Friday, December 1 when they take on VMI on the road at 7:30 p.m.
