The Maryland men's swimming and diving team was defeated by Duke (168-131) and NC State (193-104) in Saturday's tri-meet held in Durham, N.C. The men's team is now 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.
Maryland saw success in the relay events, starting the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.52) and going on to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.13).
In the 50-yard freestyle, senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) swam to a first-place finish (20.98) with junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.) coming in eighth and ninth place respectively. Maryland dominated the 100 free with sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa) placing first (46.23), and Gray taking second (46.66).
Freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) led the Terps in the 1000 free with a fifth-place finish (9:54.71) followed by junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) in sixth place. Freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) was the top finisher for the Terps in the 200 free in eighth place (1:47.79) and Rouchard notched a ninth-place finish in the event. Rouchard also swam to sixth place in the 500 free (4:51.42).
In the 100 backstroke, Kim was the top Maryland finisher in second place (51.70). Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) and freshman Spencer Wike (Sterling, Ill.) placed seventh and ninth respectively. Thomasson placed fifth in the 200 back (1:57.86) with senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) in eighth and Wike finishing tenth.
Sophomore Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.) was the top Maryland finisher in the 100 butterfly, claiming second place (51.75) and Damjanic came in third. In the 200 fly, Thomasson went on to notch a seventh-place finish (1:59.49) followed by Damjanic in ninth.
Senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) led the way in the 100 breaststroke placing second (59.92) with sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) finishing third (1:00.05) and senior Tony Miller in fourth (1:00.07). Shepard went on to win the 200 breast (2:09.59) and Cullen came in fourth. Shepard also came in seventh place in the 200 individual medley (1:59.93).
In the diving events, junior Derek Hock finished in fifth place in the 1-meter dive (273.80). Freshman Patrick Meck (Rockville, Md.) and freshman Brian Brockunier (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished in sixth and eighth place respectively. In the 3-meter dive Meck and Hock tied for fifth place (292.70) with Brockunier taking seventh.
The Terps will return to action November 16-18 for the Terrapin Cup Invitational held at the Eppley Recreation Center. Thursday, November 16 marks the first day of competition and preliminary events will begin at 10:00 am.
