
Terp Swimmers Fall To West Virginia On The Road

Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving traveled to West Virginia today for a dual meet against the Mountaineers. The men dropped the meet to West Virginia (120-92) and the women's score was (135-93). The men's team is now 1-3 overall this season and the women now hold a 3-1 overall record.
On the men's side:
For the freestyle events, senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) swam to a fourth-place finish in the 50 free (21.47). Sophomore Jake DiPiazza led Maryland in the 100 free, placing second with a time of 49.95. Freshman Kevin Reardon (Voorhees, N.J.) placed fourth in the 200 free establishing his new season-best time (1:47.48). Junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) led the Terps with a second-place swim in the 500 free (4:53.33). and Freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) had a second-place finish in the 1000 free (9:56.58).
Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) was the top finisher for Maryland in the 200 butterfly with a second-place finish (1:59.64). Freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) swam to second place in the 200 backstroke (1:58.43) and senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) finished fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:17.12).
The Terps dominated the diving events on the men's side. Junior Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) claimed the first-place position in 1 meter diving with 286.20 points with freshman Patrick Meck (Rockville, Md.) in second with 257.03 points. Maryland also claimed the top-two places in 3 meter diving with Hock in first with 244.05 points and Meck in second with 241.73 points.
The afternoon ended with the 400 free relay and a top finish by the team of Damjanic, Gray, Greene and sophomore Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.) with a 3:11.28.
On the women's side:
The Terps opened the afternoon with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (3:57.65) by senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados), junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.), freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel).
In the freestyle events, Finkler placed fourth for the 50 free (25.20) with Smoak in fifth (25.27). Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was the top finisher for the Terps in second for the 100 free (53.09). Skalinskaya also led the Terps in the 200 free with a second-place finish (1:55.08) followed by freshman Jackie Davidson in third (1:57.12). Junior Julie O'Brien (Demascus, Md.) swam to a third-place finish in the 500 free (5:13.81). Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished third in the 1000 free (10:31.41).
Maryland had an impressive showing in the 200 butterfly, claiming the top three places. Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) won the event (2:06.33). Broome followed in second (2:07.94) and freshman Patty DeScenza came in third overall (2:08.46). Lehner won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:05.62.
Junior Katarina Csomova was the top finisher in the 200 breastrstroke, finishing with a 2:28.46. Junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) swam for the Terps in the 400 individual medley, placing in second (4:31.86).
The final event for the afternoon was the 400 free relay. Maryland claimed a first-place finish with Finkler, Skalinskaya, Lehner and Davidson swimming a 3:31.28 in the event.
The next meet for the Terps will take place January 6, 2007 in North Miami, Fla. where Maryland will take on Iowa, Old Dominion and Florida International.
