The Maryland men's swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition in the 2006 ACC Championships in eighth place thanks to season-best showings in the 800 free relay and 200 medley relay.
The Terrapins' 800 free relay team, composed of freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), senior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.), sophomore Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany), and sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) finished in a season best 6:40.01. The time was good for seventh place. The previous record for the season was 7:02.94, set at the annual Terrapin Cup Invitational.
Following that up was the season-best 1:30.21 time set by the Terps' 200 medley relay team, good for sixth place. The team was comprised of freshman Dong Kim, freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.), and junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.).
Both Terrapin relays won their heats.
Competition resumes tomorrow morning at 11am from the Natatorium at the Campus Recreation Center in College Park. The morning's events include the prelims of the 500 free, the 200 IM, and the 50 free.
