Junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) won a silver medal in the 50 free as the Terps held steady in eighth place in the 2006 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Gray, who finished in a career best 19.91, trailed only N.C. State's Cullen Jones, who set a conference record with a time of 19.07. He tied Clemson's Mark Vahle. Gray's 19.91 was .02 seconds better than his previous career best, set in this morning's prelims. The time earned him an NCAA B-cut time.
Freshman Dong Kim also had an impressive run in the 50 free, winning the consolation final with a time of 20.37, putting him in ninth place overall for the event. He improved upon his previous career best, set this morning, by .05 seconds.
Meanwhile, the 200 free relay team of Kim, Gray, freshman Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.) and senior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) just missed out on a medal as they finished fourth, just .06 seconds behind third-place Clemson. Their time of 1:20.81 was good for an NCAA B-cut time, though.
Junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.), finished 12th overall in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.83. He was trailed by sophomore Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany), who recorded a 1:51.76 for 15th place. Geisen's time eclipsed his previous personal best, set this morning, by .14 seconds.
Two other Terps swam impressive heats in the 200 IM tonight as seniors Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) and Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.) finished 21st and 22nd. Foran, who swam a 1:53.72, set a personal record with the mark. Starr was close behind, finishing in 1:53.79.
Sophomore Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) finished 20th overall in the 500 free. He finished in 4:36.87.
The ACC Championships continue tomorrow morning at 11am from the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center in College Park.
