Several Terps had strong individual performances, and the 400 medley relay team finished seventh as the Maryland men's swimming and diving team maintained eighth place in the 2006 ACC Championships.
Senior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) just missed out on a top 10 finish in the 200 free, where his 1:39.37 was good for 11th overall. Doyle, who set a personal record with a 1:38.82 in this morning's prelims, was just .18 seconds behind tenth-place Ethan McCoy of Virginia.
In the same race, freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) swam a 1:39.81 to place 13th overall. Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany) qualified for the 19th seed in tonight's event with a season-best 1:39.96 time, but was a late scratch.
Junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) swam a 3:59.38 in the 400 IM to finish 14th overall, earning the Terps 3 team points. In the same event, senior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) finished 21st thanks to a swim of 4:07.26.
Freshman Dong Kim, freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.), and junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) comprised the 400 medley relay team, which finished second in their heat and seventh overall. Their time of 3:19.74 is more than 7 seconds faster than the next-fastest time posted by a Terrapin 400 medley relay team this season.
Cullen came in 15th overall in the 100 breast thanks to a 56.66 swim, eclipsing his previous personal best by .14 seconds. He set that mark this morning in the prelim heat. In the bonus consolation final, junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) swam a 57.63 to win the heat and take 17th place overall. That time was just .04 seconds off the personal best that he recorded this morning.
Kim swam a 50.08 in the 100 back to finish 15th overall. Kim, who only joined the team two meets prior to the ACC Championships, swam the two fastest times for a Terp in the event all year with his two swims today. In the prelims, he set the season-best with a 50.00.
Kim was followed by senior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.), who won the bonus consolation final with his 51.02 time. The mark is a personal best, eclipsing his previous record by .02 seconds. He set that in this morning's prelim swim. Sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) and senior Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.) finished 22nd and 23rd overall in the event with times of 52.11 and 52.22, respectively.
In the 100 fly, sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) swam a 50.63 to a 23rd place finish overall. The time sets a new personal record, eclipsing the 50.66 mark that he posted in this morning's prelims.
The ACC Championships wrap up tomorrow from the Natatorium at the Campus Recreation Center in College Park. The prelim events begin tomorrow morning at 11am.
