Terrapins Win Two on Day 1 of the Bucknell Invitational

The Terps fell to Hartwick 16-4 in the first game of the Bucknell Invitational. Coach Carl Salyer described Hartwick as one of the best teams on the East Coast.
The Terps received scoring contributions from Elizabeth Hopkins, Blaise Stanicic, Juli Jordan, and Bryndis Klein, scoring one goal apiece. Hopkins also had three steals, Stanicic had one assist and two steals, and Jordan added one steal.
Other players contributing steals were Elizabeth Eicks with two, and Allie Houseal, Orsi Ferenczy, and Christen Vagts with one each. Vagts also threw two assists.
In goal, Marissa Corwin blocked four and allowed five goals in the first half. Ashleigh Jobson played the third quarter, blocking one and allowing six. Anna Gossett finished out the game with one block and five goals scored against.
Salyer commented that the Terps' inexperience showed in this game against Hartwick, who used their strength, size, speed, and physical play to attack Maryland.
Salyer called the game "a good learning experience" because it showed "the level of play we need to get to by the end of the season."
The Terrapins turned it around in the second game of the day, defeating Slippery Rock 11-5.
Top scorers for the Terps were Rachel Jordan and Klein with three goals each. Juli Jordan and Laurel Laidlaw netted two apiece, and Allison Kuzniar and Hopkins each added one.
The Terps threw seven assists in the game; Stanicic had three, Houseal had two, and Jill Lau and Hopkins each had one. Kuzniar, Hopkins, Juli Jordan, Laidlaw, Stanicic, Houseal, and Vagts each contributed two steals, and Klein added one for a total of 15 steals.
Goalie Corwin blocked one in the first quarter, Jobson blocked three in the second and third quarters, and Gossett accumulated two blocks in the fourth.
Despite a slow start, the Terps maintained offensive and defensive pressure to pull away from Slippery Rock.
Maryland then played St. Francis in the final game of the day, finishing with a 13-4 victory. The Terps were down 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, then up 5-4 at halftime. St. Francis would not score in the second half.
Scorers for the Terps were Rachel Jordan and Klein with three goals apiece, and Kuzniar, Hopkins, Vagts, Juli Jordan, Laidlaw, Houseal, and Ferenczy netting one each.
Gossett started in goal, blocking one and allowing two in the first half. Jobson blocked four and allowed two in the second half.
The Terrapins hope to improve on taking advantage of scoring opportunities and playing tough defense for the entire possession. They will take on Penn State-Behrend tomorrow.
