COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team's two freshmen, Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver, were both named to the ACC's All-Freshman team, which was voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA). The Terps were the only team to get two selections.
At least one Terrapin freshman was named to the all-rookie squad for the fourth-consecutive year. This year, Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) and Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) combined to earn a school-record seven ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
A unanimous selection, Coleman garnered weekly rookie nods a school-record tying five times. The only freshman in the league to earn All-ACC honors, earning a spot on the second team, she is the second-highest scoring freshman in the conference, averaging 14.6 points per game. She is also the highest-rebounding rookie, averaging 7.5 rpg, while dishing out 3.1 assists per game, the third-best among conference freshmen. Her 43 blocks this season ranks 10th all-time in the ACC freshman class records.
Toliver, who received 61 of 70 votes, is a two-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree. Her 11.3 ppg are third among freshmen in the league, while leading her class with 4.0 assists per game.
The fourth-ranked Terrapins are tied for second in the ACC with a 12-2 record, their best showing since tying for second during the 1992-93 campaign. Maryland enters postseason play with a 26-3 mark, the most regular season victories in program history.
The Terps travel to Greensboro, N.C., as the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament on Friday, March 3 at 9:30 p.m. Earning a first-round bye, they play the winner of the Miami-Georgia Tech first-round game, which takes place Thursday, March 2. Maryland's quarterfinal game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South, Fox Sports Florida, New England Sports Network). It can also be heard on the Terrapin Radio Network and online at www.umterps.com.
