COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins drubbed Mount St. Mary's, 12-2, on Wednesday at Shipley Field. John Dischert allowed one hit in five scoreless innings and Matt Maropis and Steve Braun each went 3-for-5 at the plate as the Terps (7-11) tied a season-high with 15 hits as a team.
Looking for redemption following a disappointing loss at Towson yesterday afternoon, Maryland came out focused against the Mount on a chilly evening in College Park. The Terps scored in bunches (four runs in the third, three in the fourth and five in the seventh) en route to their highest scoring output of the season. Ten runs was also the largest margin of victory for the team all year, as eight different Maryland players drove in runs. Braun and catcher Chad Durakis each had three RBI and Maropis scored three times.
Dischert (2-1), a freshman from Wilmington, Del., was efficient on the mound, striking out three and allowing just one hit in 5.0 innings of work to earn the victory. He walked none and faced just one batter over the minimum.
Maryland put up four runs to open the scoring in the bottom of the third. Maropis tripled to the right field corner off new pitcher Dustin Pease to start the inning. First baseman Gerry Spessard was hit by a pitch and Dan Melvin singled to center to bring home Maropis, giving Maryland a 1-0 advantage with runners on the corners and one down. Durakis then laced a base hit to center, plating Spessard and sending Melvin to third. Third baseman Mike Murphy drove in the Terps' third run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt and rightfielder Dan Benick knocked in Durakis from second on a single to center to give Maryland a 4-0 advantage.
The Terps further built their lead during their next at-bat. With one down in the fourth, Maropis singled to right and then stole second and third. Braun singled to center, scoring the senior from Export, Pa. for the second time in as many innings. Spessard walked and Durakis belted a two-run double to center, putting Maryland ahead, 7-0, and knocking Pease (2-2) from the ballgame. Pease was charged with all of Maryland's first seven runs on his way to a loss.
The Mount broke the shutout in sixth inning off reliever Seth Overbey. Centerfielder Ivor Hodgson singled and moved to second on another base hit. After a passed ball landed him on third, he came in to score on a wild pitch, making the score 7-1.
But the Terps were not finished, as they scored five in the seventh to take a double-digit lead. Murphy led off the inning with a single and came in on a double to center by first baseman Jordan Wilson. After centerfielder Wink Nolan singled, Wilson scored on an infield hit by second baseman Joe Palumbo, making it 9-1 Terps. Following another single by Maropis, Braun stepped up and smashed a double off the top of the fence in center, bringing two more around to score to give Maryland a ten-run advantage, all with none down. Spessard then knocked in Maropis from third on a sacrifice fly to make the count to 12-1.
Maryland is back in action this weekend when the team heads to Chapel Hill for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference set with the North Carolina Tar Heels. Game times are set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
