COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (16-22, 6-14 ACC) stumbled against No. 12 North Carolina State for a second straight day, losing, 15-4, on Saturday night at Shipley Field. The Wolfpack scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings and tacked on five more over the next two frames, cruising to a double-digit victory.
Right-hander Gib Hobson (5-1) allowed no runs on one hit in three innings of relief to earn the victory. Also for NC State, second baseman Ramon Corona finished 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI to lead the offensive attack.
For Maryland, Dan Melvin went 2-for-3 with a double and his team-leading third home run of the year. Catcher Dan Mellies had a two-run double in the fourth, posting his first career extra-base hit and RBIs on the same swing. Senior Ben Pfinsgraff (2-4) was charged with the loss, giving up nine runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
After falling behind, 2-0, the Terps stormed ahead with four runs in the fourth. Melvin led off with a homer to center off starter Eric Surkamp to start the rally. After Jason Von Behren and Mike Murphy each drew walks, Mellies delivered with a two-out, two-run double off the glove of centerfielder Matt Camp to put the Terps up, 3-2. Mellies, who was making just his second career start, would move to third on a wild pitch and then score on a throwing error by the catcher to increase the Terp advantage to two.
But Maryland's first lead of the series would not last for long, as NC State came back with four runs in the top of the fifth to go up, 6-4. Shortstop Jonathan Diaz scored on a double by Corona before Brian Aragon blasted a three-run homer to center to help the Pack reclaim the lead.
The NC State bats put up another four-spot in the sixth on an RBI single by Camp and three-run triple to the right field corner by Corona.
Reliever Brett Tidball, who started the seventh on the hill for Maryland, was touched for five runs (three earned) over the next two innings as the Wolfpack surged ahead, 15-4.
The Terps will try to avoid their second straight Atlantic Coast Conference series sweep tomorrow when they take on State at 1 p.m. in the finale.
