The No. 8 seeded Maryland Women's Tennis Team lost today against No. 9 seeded NC State, 4-0, in the first round of the 29th Annual ACC Women's Tennis Championship at Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
The Maryland women started out strong in the first doubles match. No. 8 nationally ranked Ramona But and Marianne Baker beat Barbara Orlay and Alejandra Guerra, 8-2. But and Baker grasped 13 wins in doubles during the regular season, including one over Orlay and Guerra, 8-4. However, the Terps first win would be their only win of the day.
In the second doubles match, Jennifer Dent and Michal Amir fell to Nandita Chandrasekar and Stahl Johansson, 8-5 while third doubles Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva dropped to Julia Roach and Shona Lee in a close, 8-6.
The Terps headed into the singles matches at a 0-1 disadvantage. Juliana Naso, playing at sixth singles, was the first one to finish for Maryland. Neils Barringer of NC State defeated her in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. No. 73 Baker, playing at the No. 2 spot, also fell in two sets to the Wolfpack's Lee, 6-1, 6-3.
Maryland's last match to finish was Graca against NC State's Roach. Graca fell, 6-2, 6-2. But, Veronika Subertova, and Jennifer Dent's matches were not finished due to NC State's victory.
