Thirteenth-ranked Virginia blanked the Maryland Terrapins, 8-0, in front of 1,567 fans Saturday evening at Shipley Field. A costly Terp error in the sixth inning allowed Virginia to break a scoreless tie before the Cavs bolstered their lead with five more during the seventh en route to their second shutout in as many nights.
Senior Ben Pfinsgraff (2-6) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits with a walk and six strikeouts. The right-hander cruised into the sixth, at which point a pair of unearned runs came in courtesy of a Nick Jowers miscue in center. He was charged with four more in the seventh, departing with two away in favor of sophomore Ryan Moorer.
Catcher Chad Durakis went 2-for-4 with a double for the Terps to extend his hit streak to eight games. As a team, Maryland (20-27, 7-19 ACC) left runners in scoring position four times.
UVA starter Jacob Thompson (9-1) gave up five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work to pick up the victory. Designated hitter Sean Doolittle went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Cavaliers and leftfielder Brandon Guyer finished 4-for-4.
Virginia first threatened to break the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fifth. Guyer led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Patrick Wingfield then hit a sharp come-backer to the mound, which Pfinsgraff gloved and started a rundown with that ended in Guyer being tagged out at third. The senior would ring up Beau Seabury looking to end the inning and escape with the tie intact.
Some tough luck for Pfinsgraff and the Terps would lead to two UVA runs in the sixth. With Tim Henry on second following a single and stolen base, Brandon Marsh sent a fly ball towards Jowers. But the normally sure-handed sophomore misplayed the drive, allowing one run to score and Marsh to reach third. An RBI base hit by Doolittle then made it 2-0, Virginia.
The Cavalier lead swelled to seven runs in the seventh. With two away, Marsh picked up an infield RBI single against Pfinsgraff and Doolittle made it 5-0 on a two-run double to right-center. Moorer came in and allowed two more to score on a pair of hits before striking out Tom Hagan to halt the Virginia rally.
The Terps will host the Cavaliers tomorrow on Senior Day at Shipley Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and the pregame ceremony will get underway at approximately 12:40. Fans are encouraged to arrive at the park early to honor Maryland's 2006 five-man senior class.
