#37 Maryland Women's Tennis Team fell to #12 Duke, 4-3, in Durham, NC on Sunday. The match was their fourth consecutive on the road and dropped the Terps to 9-9 overall, and 2-5 in the ACC.
In the doubles matches, Maryland started strong, becoming only the fourth team to win the doubles point against Duke this season. First doubles #13 Marianne Baker and Ramona But defeated their opponents, 8-6 while third doubles Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva also came out on top, 9-7.
Michal Amir, who lost her doubles match, came out on top in the singles, quickly beating #108 Clelia Deltour, 6-1, 6-0. However, number three singles Jennifer Dent fell to Melissa Mang, 6-3, 6-1. With Maryland clinging to 2-1 lead over Duke, Mihneva added another win to increase the Terps lead to 3-1, defeating her opponent, 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth singles match.
\Duke's Tara Iyer closed the lead by defeating Veronika Subertova, 6-2, 6-2. #2 Daniela Bercek also won for Duke against #59 But in a tight first match, 7-6, and 6-2 in the second, to tie the match at 3-3.
In the final match, #91 Baker faced Jackie Carleton, who defeated her in the first set, 6-3. Baker came back to win the second set, 6-4, but could not hold on in the third, falling, 6-1.
The women's team will be back to action at home on Friday, April 7, against North Carolina State.
