Four Maryland gymnasts competed tonight in the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Terps ended the 2006 season with strong performances and high scores but did not qualify for the NCAA Championship. Only the top two teams advanced and the top two all-around performers (from teams not advancing). Maryland's individual competitors would have to win their event in order to advance to the NCAA championship.
Rachel Martinez finished in eleventh place in the all-around competition, scoring 38.725. Martinez notched 9.75 on vault (tied for 19th), 9.50 on uneven bars (36th), 9.65 on balance beam (24th) and 9.825 on floor exercise (tied for 13th).
Rachel Colon placed eighteenth in the all-around competition, scoring 37.725. Colon tallied 9.25 on vault (40th), 9.675 on uneven bars (26th), 9.075 on balance beam (41st) and 9.725 on floor exercise (tied for 29th).
Angie Ferg tied Martinez on vault, scoring 9.75 (tied for 19th). Alex Gatch notched 9.375 on balance beam (32nd).
Martinez completed her career as a Terp and leaves with several school records. Gatch also finished out a strong career as a beam specialist for the team and added vault and uneven bars this season. Colon and Ferg will return next season to lead a Maryland squad that will have one of the best Freshmen classes in the nation.
