Gainesville, Fla. - No. 40 South Florida defeated No. 32 Maryland, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships. The match was played at the University of Florida. USF's record is now 17-5 while Maryland's is 12-12.
Maryland started off their doubles matches with No. 11 Ramona But and Marianne Baker, who defeated their No. 9 opponents, 8-3. However, the third doubles slot was grabbed by USF over Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva, 8-1. The doubles point was decided in USF's favor in the second doubles match, when Jennifer Dent and Brooke Rogers fell, 8-3.
No. 89 Baker faced No. 60 Courtney Vernon in the second singles slot. Baker fell to Vernon, 6-2, 6-1. Dent's match was the second to finish in the fourth slot, falling to Gabriela Duch, 6-2, 6-0. With a 3-0 lead over Maryland, USF clinched their final win over No. 33 But in the number one slot. But fell to No. 70 Neyssa Etienne, 6-3, 6-2.
Third slot Veronika Subertova's match did not finish against No. 90 Liz Cruz. USF was leading 6-3, 5-3. Sixth singles Graca's also did not finish with USF leading 6-3, 5-1.
At the fifth singles spot, Mihneva was the only one who led for Maryland. While her match did not finish, Mihneva was ahead, 6-2, 2-2.
USF advanced to take on Florida on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., with the winner set to advance to the Round of 16 in Palo Alto, Calif., on Thursday, May 18. Florida took a 4-1 decision over USF on Feb. 8 in Gainesville.
