But Loses in NCAA Singles Championship

STANFORD, Calif. - University of Maryland senior Ramona But lost her first-round match in the NCAA Women's Singles Championship on Wednesday at the national tournament being hosted by Stanford University.

But, from Timisoara, Romania, lost to Georgia Rose of Northwestern, 6-3, 6-4, in a first-round match in the 64-player singles draw. But, who was 33rd in the most recent FILA ITA singles rankings, was making her third straight appearance in the NCAA Singles Draw for the Terrapins.

The Maryland senior will be in action again on Thursday, pairing with doubles partner Marianne Baker in a first-round match in the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Baker and But will face Margarita Kamaukhova and Anastassia Syssenko of Sacramento State in the first-round of the 32-team doubles draw. The Terrapin doubles pair, ranked 11th in the nation coming into the tournament, will face the 46th-ranked doubles team in the first round.

But and Baker were each All-ACC performers for the Terrapins this season.

The finals of the doubles championship will be held on Monday, May 29.
