STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Maryland's top women's doubles team of Ramona But and Marianne Baker reached the round of 16 in the 2006 NCAA Women's Doubles Tournament but fell late Friday to the second-seeded team.
But and Baker lost to Melissa Applebaum and Audra Cohen of Miami, 6-3, 6-4, in a second-round match late Friday night at Stanford University. The run by the Terrapins marked their deepest in an NCAA draw in recent history.
But and Baker, who had an eight-match winning streak snapped, came into the match ranked 11th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national ranking.
The Terrapin doubles pairing finished the year with a 27-6 record.
