Men's Lacrosse Notebook: Walters & Team USA Set For World Championships

July 12, 2006

College Park, Md. - Men's Lacrosse Notebook:

Walters, Team USA Set For World Championships
• Former Maryland lacrosse All-American Joe Walters and the rest of the U.S. National Team are getting ready for the 2006 ILF World Championships in London, Ontario.

• The World Championships begin with the opening ceremonies on Thursday, July 13 and conclude with the gold medal game on Saturday, July 22, at 3 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium. The United States has won eight of the nine World Championship titles, including the last six in a row.

• Team USA finished its exhibition schedule with a perfect 3-0 record. In the team's first exhibition, a 27-2 win over Ireland, Walters scored three goals and added two assists. The left-handed sharpshooter, who has been playing midfield with the national team, scored one goal and added another assist in the second warm-up game, a 15-6 win over a collection of former Syracuse All-Stars. The U.S. team concluded its exhibition schedule with an 18-10 win over the MLL All-Stars.

• Former Maryland volunteer coach Paul Cantabene is an alternate for the U.S. Team. He suited up for the USA vs. the MLL All-Stars and scored a goal in the fourth quarter.

• The U.S. team has been slotted into the Blue Division, along with gold medal contenders Canada and Australia. The Stars and Stripes begin play on Friday, July 14, with a 4 p.m. game vs. Australia at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

MLL Update
• Former Terp Bill McGlone enjoyed his finest day as a professional lacrosse player last weekend. The two-time first team All-American scored five goals, including his first-career two-pointer, to help lead the Baltimore Bayhawks to a 19-12 victory over the Boston Cannons. McGlone is sixth in scoring on the Bayhawks with 13 points in just six games.

• Brian Dougherty, a two-time Kelly Award winner at Maryland, was named the MLL's Defensive Player of the Week after making 23 saves in Philadelphia's 13-12 overtime win over Chicago.

• A couple of former Terps are on the move as the MLL's trading deadline passed on July 12.

Michael Howley, the 2003 Defenseman of the Year in college and a 2005 MLL All-Star, is now a member of the Long Island Lizards after being traded by the Bayhawks as part of three-team deal.

Xander Ritz was also traded at the deadline. The 2006 All-American was a third round pick of Philadelphia, but the Barrage shipped the Wayne, Pa., native, to the San Francisco Dragons in exchange for San Francisco's third round pick in the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft.
