Terps Fall To No. 3 Bruins

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapins fell to the No. 3 Bruins in the final match of the Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational tonight, 3-0 (22-30, 23-30, 23-30) before a record-crowd of 1,716 at the Comcast Center Pavilion. The Terps fall to 7-2, as the Bruins extend their winning streak to 13 matches.

Maryland posted a .223 hitting percentage with Jade Brown leading the Terps with 10 kills and ten digs, marking her seventh double-double in nine games. Meredith Doyle notched nine kills on 13 swings for the Terps for a .692 hitting percentage, adding a solo block and two block assists. Maggie Schmelzle finished the night with nine kills and eight digs.

The Terps Meredith Doyle and Maggie Schmelzle received all-tournament honors, while UCLA's Nana Meriwether was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Ali Daley had eight kills in the first game and finished the match with 19 for the Bruins. Meriwether also had 14 kills (.684) for the Bruins, while Kaitlyn Sather had ten. Nellie Spicer collected 50 assists in the match.

Outside hitter Mary Beth Brown and Meredith Doyle opened the first game on a block which ignited the crowd. Two Bruin errors and a kill by Mary Beth Brown pushed the Terps ahead, 4-1. After the Bruins tied the game at 6-6, the Bruins scored four consecutive points on Colby Lyons serve. The Bruins would hold the lead, as the Terps inched closer coming within three at 18-21, and closed the first game on kills by Ali Daley and Emily Clements for a 22-30.

Meredith Doyle's kill and a service ace by Hayley Hanson helped Maryland take the lead in the second game, extending it to 6-3 on two Bruin errors and a service ace by Jade Brown. The Bruins tested Maryland's defense and regained the lead for 13-17, when Beth Gillming and Jade Brown downed two kills to inch further, sparking a Bruin timeout. UCLA pulled away, increasing their lead by eight points at 19-27. The Terps fended off three game points on kills by Gillming and Jade Brown, yet dropped the second game, 23-30.

The Bruins held a slight edge at the start of the third game as the Terps moved within two at 11-13 from two aces by Beth Gillming and a kill by Jade Brown. Schmelzle downed a kill for 13-15 with the Terps keeping the game tight as Jade Brown notched a kill for 19-21. Nellie Spicer sparked the Bruins' momentum with five straight points for 19-26, ultimately winning the game, 23-30. Spicer finished the match with 50 assists for the Bruins.

The Terps play Florida State (Sept. 22) and Miami (Sept. 24), before returning to Comcast on Friday, Sept. 29 against Virginia.
