Maryland Swimming and Diving Acquires New Volunteer Assistant Coach

Sept. 27, 2006

The University of Maryland welcomes Glenn Mills to the swimming and diving coaching staff this season. Mills was a member of the 1980 Olympic Team in the 200-breast. He set a national high school record in the 100-breast in 1980. He was also a member of the 1982 World Championship Team in the 200-breast. The following year, he went on to swim for the University of Alabama and claimed the 1983 NCAA title in the 200-breast. During his career, Mills received many honors including inductions into the University of Alabama Swimming Hall of Fame, the Cincinnati Marlin Swimming Hall of Fame, and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.

Mills will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Maryland swimming and diving programs. He has been involved with swimming for 40 years; he swam successfully for 17 years and then went on to teach young athletes, train elite swimmers, and develop instructional products for aspiring swimmers.

Mills serves as president of Go Swim Productions (2002-present) based in Stevensville, Maryland. The company develops informative DVDs for coaches and swimmers. The DVDs communicate the technical aspects of some of the world's top elite athletes.

Mills is also the technical advisor for Swimming World Magazine (2003-present). Mills writes two technique-related articles for each month's edition of the magazine. He also contributes to the magazine's website by providing technical tips as online readings.

Mills has a plethora of coaching experience. He has instructed more than 150 camps and clinics. He also founded and coached Swim Cleveland, a club swimming program, and established the high school swimming program at Cleveland Heights High School in Ohio. In addition, he founded and led a club team out of Cleveland State University called Team Viking, which grew from six to 150 swimmers in just four years.

Another activity that Mills enjoys is public speaking. He uses his experiences in the sport to conduct many programs and camps with the purpose of positively informing young swimmers on techniques and strategies to achieve success.

Glenn Mills will be a strong addition to the Maryland coaching staff. "I'm excited to be working with the athletes and coaches at the University of Maryland," Mills says, "I think this is the most talented group of young coaches in the country, and I'm honored to be spending some time along side of a team that understands what building a winning tradition takes. It's going to be very fun."
