The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving team completed a community service project this past Tuesday, January 23rd. The team volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank located in Washington D.C. The food bank is a nonprofit organization committed to collecting food and providing education on hunger and nutrition. It is the largest organization of its kind in the D.C. Metropolitan Area.
The Capital Area Food Bank, founded 27 years ago, serves to distribute donated food to more than 700 different agencies throughout the area. During the Terrapins' visit to the food bank, the team assisted in sorting food that had been donated. The team also helped to prepare the food for packaging and delivery to agencies in the D.C. area.
"This service event was important so we could all help give to those in need," said senior captain Tony Miller who initiated the team's visit. He explained that the project "allowed the team to realize that there are a lot of people who need help. Also, this event allowed us to get some name recognition in the community, while providing a great service. I believe our team helped enormously in a few hours and believe everyone was able to take something away from the experience."
