The University of Maryland men's swimming team competed in the Florida International University Invitational today to close out a week of training for the team in Miami, Florida. The Terrapins finished second in the relay meet with 126 points behind Iowa with 142 points. The Terps placed ahead of New York University (28 points), Carnegie Mellon (26 points), American (24 points) and Baldwin-Wallace College (6 points). Maryland won six of the eight relay events on the men's side.
In the first event of the day, the Terps swept the 400-yard medley relay with the team of sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.), sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) swimming a season-high time of 3:29.03 for first place. In fourth place was the Maryland team of junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.), senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.), sophomore Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.) and sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) with a time of 3:34.97.
The second event for the Invitational was the 500 freestyle relay. The two Maryland teams for this relay finished in third and fourth place. In third, with a time of 4:17.44, was sophomore Chris Chambers (Cheverly, Md.), senior Andrew Doeck (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio). The fourth-place team of junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.), freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.), freshman Kevin Reardon (Voorhees, N.J.) and junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) finished in 4:18.46.
Maryland went on to place second in the 200 butterfly relay in 1:36.00 with the team of Damjanic, Thomasson, Glennon and Doeck leading the Terps. Finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:43.12 was the Maryland team of Greene, Reardon, Rouchard and Golaszewski.
The Terps won the 200 breaststroke relay with the team of Cullen, senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.), Closs and Shepard stopping the clock at 1:50.56.
The Terps also won the 400 free relay with Kim, Closs, Greene and Gray swimming a 3:12.45 good for first place. Reardon, Chamber and DiPiazza comprised the sixth-place finishing team with a time of 3:22.79.
The Maryland team of Kim, Miller, Thomasson and Damjanic led the men's meet in the 200 backstroke relay taking first place with a time of 1:37.45.
In 3:40.38, Maryland won the 400 individual medley relay with Miller, Cullen, Shepard and Thomasson swimming the event. Rouchard, Golaszewski and Reardon had a fifth place finish in the relay (3:58.45).
Maryland won the final event of the day with Kim, Closs, DiPiazza and Gray swimming a 1:26.20 in the 200 free relay. The Terps also picked up a seventh-place finish in the event with the team of Doeck, Greene, Chambers and Glennon swimming a 1:31.04.
The Terps will return to action on January 12th and 13th for senior weekend at home against Pittsburgh, Villanova and Richmond. Friday's meet will begin at 5:00 pm and Saturday's meet will begin at 11:00 am at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center. Seniors Andrew Doeck, Danny Gray, Tony Miller and Tim Shepard will be honored on the men's side at the event.
