The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Black and Red Invitational tonight, hosted by the Campus Recreation Services. The invitational was not officially scored.

Lone captain for the women's team senior Emily Smoak competed in the first event of the night in the 100-yard breaststroke. Smoak swam a 1:08.47, finishing sixth.
Freshmen Laura Jojic and Erin Holmes both swam in the seventh event of the night, the 400-yard individual medley. Jojic finished first with a time of 4.35.55 while Holmes followed in a close second, capturing a time of 4:35.78.
Rounding out for the girls was freshman Annie Fittin. Competing in the third event of the night, Fittin swam in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:55.20.
On the men's side, senior captain Eric Thomasson swam in the sixth event, the 100-yard butterfly. Thomasson finished with a time of 51.74, finishing third.
Maryland had impressive finishes by the juniors. Andy Dilz, Eric Cullen, John Closs, Kyle Glennon, and Dong Kim all had top five finishes. Dilz, Cullen and Closs all swam in the 100-yard breaststroke. Dilz finished second with a time of 58.59, while Cullen came in third with a time of 58.86. Closs finished fifth with a time of 1:00.47.
Dong Kim swam in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing fifth with a time of 1:45.46. Glennon competed in the 100-yard butterfly, completing the race wit ha time of 52.61.
Freshmen Kirk Jackson and Roger Dent competed in the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley, respectively. Jackson finished third with a time of 1:45.15, while Dent completely in the last event of the night with a time of 4:12.97.
"We swam very well tonight," stated Schroeder. "We are a lot faster tonight than we were at the same time last year."
"Our attitude is much improved and we are racing very well. Some of our athletes are starting the season at or near the same times they were at the end of the season last year, which is very exciting," Schroeder added.
The Terps' regular season will begin on October 26 when they host Johns Hopkins for the season opener.
