COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Greivis Vasquez scored 18 and Maryland defeated North Florida, 79-50, in the first round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.
Maryland (1-0) advances to play Hampton (1-0) in the College Park region final Monday. North Florida (0-1) will face Tulsa (0-1) in a consolation game.
The Terrapins committed 14 first-half turnovers, including 11 through the opening 14:04. But Maryland held North Florida scoreless for a stretch of 7:56 in the first half, creating a nine-point lead with a 12-0 run.
Maryland was without starting forwards James Gist and Landon Milbourne. In their place, Cliff Tucker and Dave Neal made their first career starts.
Despite being without Gist, who averaged 7.2 rebounds per game as a junior, the Terrapins held a 43-26 rebounding edge over the Ospreys. Vasquez, Tucker, and Bambale Osby recorded seven rebounds each.
Maryland shot 64.5 percent from the field after halftime and ran away in the second half, thanks in part to an 11-0 run over a stretch of 3:05. Adrian Bowie scored 12 points, all but one in the second half.
North Florida was led by Tom Hammonds and Justin Cecil, both of whom scored 14 points. Brent Wood gave the Ospreys seven first-half points off the bench, but was held scoreless in the second half.
