
Terps Conclude Second Day

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's swimming and diving program took the third place slot with 517 points in their second day of competition, falling behind UConn (714) and West Chester (548).
The Terps began the day by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Juniors Dong Kim, Eric Cullen and Andy Dilz, and freshman Nick Cordes picked up 40 points with their first place finish (1:31.75) in the A-finals. Terrapin junior John Closs, sophomores Chris Sanford and Aleksandar Damjanic, and freshman Matt Gruszecki won the B-finals, placing 9th overall with a time of 1:34.07. Maryland's 58 points started the Terps in 3rd place with a combined total of 276 points.
Freshman Haywood Miller (4:07.59) and freshman Roger Dent (4:13.01) placed 5th and 8th in the 400-yard IM to earn a combined total of 25 points.
Maryland had another first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Nick Cordes swam a time of 49.66 to win the A-finals. Damjanic (49.63) and freshman Chris Bagley (51.42) also placed for the Terps, finishing 1st and 4th in the B-finals, respectively.
Sophomore Chris Rouchard (1:41.23) and freshman Kirk Jackson (1:42.34) placed 1st and 2nd in the B-finals, 9th and 10th overall, respectively. Maryland now had a combined total of 351 points in the third slot.
Cullen placed 2nd in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.54, only a fraction of the time behind West Chester's Marek Malopolski (56.45). Junior Andy Dilz was close behind (57.12) to grab the 4th seed, while Closs (59.53) finished 12th.
Maryland saw their third 1st place finish of the day in the 100-yard backstroke. Junior Dong Kim finished with a time of 50.60, earning 20 points for the Terps. Sanford (51.48) and freshman Mitch Challacombe (51.75) finished 5th and 6th to add 27 points, giving Maryland a combined 450 points during the invitational.
In the 800-yard relay, Jackson, Honore, Damjanic and Rouchard placed second with a time of 6:50.86. Bagley, Dilz, senior captain Ken Golaszewski and sophomore Andy Mears finished 9th with a time of 6:56.79.
Maryland's lone male diver senior Derek Hock placed fourth in the 1-meter diving competition. He scored a 253.30 in six dives.
Maryland finished with a combined 517 points for their second day.
The Terp Cup will come to a close tomorrow in their final day of competition. Swimmers will compete in six events, including the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.
