Postgame Notes: Maryland 76, Princeton 52
Langhorne misses first game
For the first time in her Maryland career, senior center Crystal Langhorne, a preseason first-team all-american, did not see the court. Langhorne had not only played, but started, all 104 games in her career before missing tonight's game due to an ankle injury. Langhorne is expected to start Sunday when the Terps play the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Freshmen starters
Frese has shown no reservation throwing freshman right onto the court for the first games of their collegiate careers. Freshman guard Marah Strickland got the nod in the backcourt tonight.
Ten in a row
Tonight's victory over the Princeton Tigers was the Terps' 10th consecutive season-opening victory. The Terps are now 32-6 all-time in season openers.
Undefeated against the Ivy
The Terps' last two victories have come against Ivy League competition. Prior to tonight's game against Princeton, Maryland knocked off Harvard, 89-65, in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament. Maryland is 6-0 historically against Ivy League opponents. The Terps are 1-0 against Priinceton and Brown and have defeated Harvard and Pennsylvania twice each.
Toliver does it again
Point guard Kristi Toliver has shown a propensity to hit long 3-point baskets at the end of halves and games throughout her career. Toliver did it again against the Tigers, running the length of the court at the end of the first half and draining a long trey from the right wing as time expired to increase Maryland's lead from seven to 10. Toliver also hit a three-pointer at the end of the first half in last week's exhibition game against the U.S. National Team. Toliver's bucket gave the Terps some momentum starting the second half. Maryland began the second half on an 11-5 run over the first three minutes to build a 16-point lead.
Sharing the rock
In the absence of Langhorne, the Terps employed a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Tigers. Five Terps reached double figures in points, led by Kristi Toliver's 16. Marissa Coleman had 14, while Laura Harper and Jade Perry each scored 12. Freshman Drey Mingo netted 10 bench points in her first career game. Marah Strickland was just short of double figures, scoring nine points.
Harper on brink of 900-point mark
With 12 points against Princeton, senior forward Laura Harper is only three points shy of 900 for her career.
From start to finish
Marissa Coleman gave Maryland a 2-0 lead on a jumper 28 seconds into the game and the Terps never trailed from there. Princeton got as close as one at 10-9, but Maryland never trailed in the contest.
Double-doubles
With 12 points and 11 rebounds, Jade Perry recorded her seventh career double-double, while Kristi Toliver scored 16 points and dished out 10 assists for her third double-double. This marks the second straight game dating back to last year with at least one player with a double-double.
