Maryland Travels to Face NC State

Maryland opens a two-game road swing in the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Terrapins travel to face the NC State Wolfpack on Wednesday (Feb. 14). Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the RBC Center. The game can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
• The Terps carry a mark of 18-7 (4-6 ACC) into the contest, while NC State is 13-10 (3-7 ACC). Maryland posted a 72-60 victory over Duke at Comcast Center on Sunday. The Wolfpack have dropped their last two games at Georgia Tech (74-65) and at Miami (80-65). NC State knocked off North Carolina (83-79) in their last home game at the RBC Center.
• Maryland senior D.J. Strawberry leads the Terps with 14.5 points per game. He is 15th in the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring. Sophomore Ben McCauley leads the Wolfpack with 16.3 points per game. He is the ninth leading scorer in the conference. Freshman Brandon Costner is 10th in the ACC in scoring (16.1 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.9 rpg).
• Wednesday's game marks the 140th meeting between the two schools. NC State leads the all-time series 72-67. The Terrapins have won 10 of the last 15 meetings between to two schools, but the Wolfpack have posted wins in each of the last three meetings.
• Maryland head coach Gary Williams is 27-11 all-time against NC State and has guided the Terps to a record of 10-7 in Raleigh.
• The Terrapins are looking for their 19th win of the season. The Terps have tallied at least 19 wins in each of the past 10 years. Maryland has averaged 22.8 wins the last 12 years.

Maryland senior D.J. Strawberry has continued his strong all-around play as a senior. Strawberry is 15th in the ACC with a team-high 14.5 points per game. He also ranks tenth in the league with 3.8 assists per game.
• The senior swingman is second on the conference with 2.36 steals per game and ranks eighth in assist to turnover ratio (1.68).
• Strawberry has 983 career points and needs just 17 more to become the 45th Terrapin to reach the 1,000-point plateau. His 362 points this year is his highest single-season total.

Maryland jumped out to a 29-9 lead against Duke before capturing a 72-60 victory over the Blue Devils at Comcast Center Sunday (Feb. 11) afternoon. Duke trimmed the lead to just six (58-52) mid-way through the second half, but the Terps used a 10-2 run to push the lead back to 14 en route to the win. Maryland enjoyed an advantage in the post, outscoring the Blue Devils, 48-30, in the paint. The Terps scored 13 second-chance points and converted 17 Duke turnovers into 21 points.
• Four Terrapins scored in double figures, including freshman Greivis Vasquez who recorded a team-high 18 points. James Gist scored 16 for the Terps, while Ekene Ibekwe added 13 points. D.J. Strawberry scored 10 points and hauled down five.
• In addition to his 16 points, junior James Gist added a game-high 10 rebounds against Duke. It was his eighth career double-double and sixth of the season. He is averaging 18.4 points and shooting 63 percent from the floor in his last four games.

The ACC is the top ranked conference in the Sagarin Computer Poll and the second ranked conference according to the RPI.
• The ACC is the only conference to have eight teams ranked in the Top 40 of the RPI.
•The ACC has played the nation's second toughest non-conference schedule according to the RPI.
• The RPI lists 10 of the 12 ACC teams in the Top 60 of schedule strength. • The ACC is a combined 26-18 (.591) in games against the other conferences ranked in the Top 5 of the RPI.
• The ACC has compiled a non-conference record of 132-33 (.800) - this is tops among all conferences - the ACC is the only league to have a non-conference winning percentage over 80 percent.
• Nine of the 12 ACC teams currently have 16 or more wins this season (75% of the ACC) - no other league has as many teams or percentage of teams with 16 or more wins.

• Maryland has appeared in the AP Top 25 a total of 348 times. The Terrapins have placed in the AP Top 25 at least once in each of the last 14 seasons.
• The Terps have been ranked in the coaches poll 323 times. Maryland has placed in the coaches poll at least once in each of the last 14 seasons.
• The Terrapins were ranked 25th in the February 12 Sagarin Ratings. Maryland has six wins over teams ranked in the Sagarin Top 50. The Terps have posted an impressive 3-1 mark against teams ranked in the Sagarin Top 25.
• Maryland is ranked 33rd in the latest RPI Report. The Terps have seven wins against teams ranked in the Top 100 of the RPI. Maryland has played the 18th toughest schedule in the country, according to the RPI.
• The Terps were named Team of the Week on November 20 by both Dick Vitale and Andy Katz.

The Terps have made a renewed commitment to defense in 2006-07. Maryland has forced its opponents into an average of 17.9 turnovers per game this season.
• The Terps lead the ACC and are fourth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.385).
• Maryland's opponents are shooting just 29 percent (142-of-495) from three-point range which leads the league.
• The Terps are averaging 7.8 steals per game and have recorded 174 blocked shots through 24 games.
• Maryland is tops in the ACC and second in the nation with 7.0 blocked shots per game.

Maryland has displayed a balanced offensive attack this season. The Terps boast the third-highest scoring average in the league (79.6 ppg), and have four players averaging double figures.
D.J. Strawberry leads the team with 14.5 points per game. James Gist is averaging 12.8 points per game, while Mike Jones is averaging 12.6 points per contest. Ekene Ibekwe is averaging 10.9 points.
• Jones has led the team in scoring nine times this season, while Strawberry has paced the team in points eight times. Ibekwe and Gist have led the Terps in the scoring column in four games this season.
• Maryland has outscored its opponents by an average of 12.3 points per game this season. That is the second best scoring margin in the ACC behind North Carolina (22.0).

Four Terrapins are rapidly climbing the school's all-time record book. Seniors D.J. Strawberry, Ekene Ibekwe, and Mike Jones have all made their mark in the Terrapin annals, along with junior James Gist:
• Strawberry ranks sixth in school history with 192 career steals.
• Ibekwe sits in fifth place on the school's all-time blocked shots list. The Carson, Calif., native has 207 career rejections at Maryland and has averaged 1.8 blocked shots per game.
• With seven rebounds against Duke, Ibekwe moved into 14th place on the school's all-time rebounding list. The senior forward has 712 career rebounds.
• Ibekwe has attempted 450 career free throws and ranks 13th all-time at Maryland.
• Senior Mike Jones has distinguished himself as one of the best shooters in the ACC and has rapidly moved up the school's all-time three pointers list. Jones has totaled 180 three-point field goals, which is fourth on the school's all-time list. Jones has hoisted 450 shots from beyond the arc, which is the fourth highest total in school history.
• Gist has totaled 139 blocked shots during his three seasons in College Park. He is eighth on the school's all-time list and has averaged 1.7 blocks per game.

Freshman Greivis Vasquez has tallied 98 assists this season and is well on his way to recording one of the top assist totals among freshman point guards at Maryland. Vasquez is seventh on the all-time freshman assists list, while Eric Hayes is eighth with 94.
• Steve Blake (2000-03) owns the school record with 217 assists as a freshman in 2000.

Maryland has proven to be one of the nation's most proficient 3-point shooting teams since the rule was instituted in 1987.
• Maryland has made at least one 3-pointer in 277 consecutive games.
• Maryland has failed to make a 3-pointer just twice in the last 352 games.
• The last game the Terps failed to make a 3-pointer was Jan 7, 1999 when Maryland went 0-for-7 from 3-point range in a 71-66 win at Virginia.
• Since Gary Williams took over, Maryland has hit a 3-pointer in 562-of-569 games.
• Since the rule was instituted in 1987, Maryland has hit at least one three-pointer in 620-of-629 games.
• Maryland made a school-record 217 treys in 2001-02.
• The Terps' top 3-point shooting percentage was 46.1% (122-290) in 1987-88.
• Maryland set new school records for most three-pointers in a game (17) and most three-point attempts (37) earlier this season against Missouri-Kansas City.

Maryland has been one of the top programs in the ACC over the past ten seasons.
• With 96 wins since 1998, Maryland ranks third among all ACC schools in regular-season wins.
• Head coach Gary Williams ranks second among active ACC coaches with 151 career wins in league play.
• The Terps captured the 2002 ACC regular-season title & the 2004 ACC Tourney championship.

Maryland is in its 54th season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps were a charter member of the conference in 1953-54 after 30 years as a member of the Southern Conference.
• The Terps are 383-376 (.507) all-time in ACC games.
• Maryland is 241-141 (.631) in ACC home games.
• Maryland is 143-235 (.381) in ACC away games.
