
Kim Takes Third At ACCs In 100 Freestyle

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland men's swimming and diving ended the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships today with an eighth-place finish (253 points). Florida State University led the meet with 714 points, winning their first-ever ACC Championships. Following Florida State was Virginia in second (616.5 points), North Carolina in third (532.5 points), Virginia Tech in fourth (388 points), Clemson in fifth (323.5 points), Georgia Tech in sixth (267.5 points) and NC State in seventh (258 points). The Terrapins finished ahead of Duke (ninth; 128 points), Miami (10th; 73 points) and Boston College (11th; 68 points).
Prelims:
Senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) led Maryland in the prelim for the 100-yard freestyle. Gray swam an NCAA B-cut time of 44.40, just .02 seconds from his career best in the event, for the third-place spot in tonight's championship final. After breaking the school record in the 100 backstroke last night with a time of 48.93, sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.) went on to swim a season-best NCAA B-cut time of 44.54 for the fifth-place seed in the championship final for the 100 free.
For an alternate position in finals of the 100 free, freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.) swam a career-best time of 46.20 for a 25th-place finish. In 28th place for the 100 free prelim was junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.) with a season-best time of 46.67. Sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) established a career-best time in the event, finishing 32nd overall (47.09).
In this morning's prelims for the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Andy Dilz (Cincinatti, Ohio) led the Terps with a career-best time of 2:02.79 for a 10th-place position in the consolation final for the event. Sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) and senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) also qualified for the consolation final in the 200 breast. Cullen swam a career-best time of 2:03.16 for 13th and Shepard finished with a season-best time of 2:04.08 for 16th. Senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) earned a spot in the bonus consolation final after swimming a season best of 2:05.46 for 19th in prelims.
In the final event of the morning, freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) notched a fifth-place seed for the championship final in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 1:48.31. Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) earned a spot in the consolation final with an 11th-place finish and career-best time of 1:49.79. Sophomore Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.) finished in 27th with a season-best time of 1:55.83.
Finals:
Junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) led Maryland in the 1650 free with a 14th-place finish and career-best time of 15:46.18. Freshman Brian Honore (West Windsor, N.J.) and freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) followed in 25th and 26th place respectively. Honore swam a 16:01.60 and Rouchard established a career-best time of 16:01.66.
Kim went on to capture third place in the championship final for the 100 free with another NCAA B-cut time of 44.57, scoring 16 points for the Terps. Gray tallied 13 points for Maryland with his sixth-place finish in the championship final (44.96). In the bonus consolation final for the 100 free, Greene placed 22nd (46.75) and DiPiazza finished 24th (46.86).
Dilz topped his career best set in prelims for the 200 breast with a time of 2:02.49 in the consolation final. Dilz finished 10th overall in the event, scoring seven points for Maryland. Cullen finished 13th overall (2:03.21) and Shepard finished 15th overall with a season-best time of 2:04.05, both scoring points for the Terps. In the bonus consolation final for the 200 breast, Miller swam to a 19th-place finish (2:06.55).
In the championship final for the 200 fly, Damjanic collected 14 points for the Terps with a fifth-place finish and a season best over his prelim time (1:48.28). Thomasson picked up five points for Maryland with a 12th-place finish in the consolation final for the 200 fly (1:50.27).
Maryland closed out the 2007 ACC Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 400 free relay. The squad of Kim, Gray, Dilz and Damjanic swam a season-best time in the event (3:00.84). Virginia Tech won the relay with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:56.67.
Individual winners for tonight's events included: Kyle Young in the 1650 free (Florida State; NCAA A-cut time of 15:02.36), Jarryd Botha in the 200 back (Florida State; NCAA B-cut time of 1:45.44), Ed Denton in the 100 free (Florida State; NCAA B-cut time of 44.09), Vanja Rogulj in the 200 breast (Virginia; NCAA A-cut time of 1:56.57) and Stefan Hirniak in the 100 fly (Virginia; NCAA B-cut time of 1:45.36).
