Palm Springs, Calif. -
Maryland suffered two losses on the final day of the Palm Springs Classic, falling 11-1 to the 16th ranked California Bears, and 1-0 to the UNLV Rebels. The Terps opened with two impressive victories in the tournament, but posted four straight losses to close the weekend.
The Terps never got off the ground in their first game with California, giving up four runs on a grand slam in the bottom of the first to Cal third baseman Katie Vickers.
Maryland never recovered from the early 4-0 defecit, managing its only hit and run of the game in the second inning. Keri Lounge singled right up the middle of the defense and then stole second. After a Brittany Bessho single to left field moved Lounge to third, Jennifer Wellborn hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Lounge home for the Terps' lone run of the game.
The Terps' misfortune continued in the second inning, as California quickly loaded the bases to start the second.
Carly Winger singled to start things off, and Maryland's Meredith Nelles walked Morgon Seigel to put runners on first and second. Erika Racklin bunted, but the Terps misplayed the ball, and were unable to throw out any of the runners.
Abbey Welch entered the game for the Terps, but was unable to stop the bleeding. Christina Shallig walked to score Winger, and Seigel scored on the next play when Brittany Bessho was unable to stop the pitch.
Vickers drove home Shallig with a single to center field, and another wild pitch brought Bernice Masaniai.
The Bears scored three more run in the third inning for the final margin.
Maryland stayed on the field to take on the Rebels of UNLV. The Terps stepped up their game on the defensive side of the ball, but were unable to muster enough firepower to earn the win.
UNLV freshman pitcher Stephanie Bregante silenced the Terrapin bats with a deadly outside slider. She struck out nine batters, giving up five hits and no runs in seven innings.
Maryland's Stacey Jennings got the start, but walked lead-off hitter Jaci Hull. Hull stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With Hull on third, the pitch from Jennings was again beyond catcher Brittany Bessho's glove, and Hull ran home to score the game's only run.
The Terps twice had the tying run on third base, but were unable to convert the score. Abbey Welch, pinch running for Lindsay Klein, stood on third with two outs left in the top of the seventh inning.
Alex Gagne, pinch hitting for Whitney Reigel, stepped up to the plate for her first at-bat of the game, but Bregante struck her out swinging, and the Terps fell to 5-6 on the season.
