Feb. 25, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team started off the second day of the Bucknell Invitational with a 10-3 victory over Villanova. The Terrapins were up 9-1 at halftime, and maintained the lead for their third straight win of the tournament.

Eight different Terps scored in the match-up, led by sophomores Bryndis Klein and Elizabeth Hopkins with two goals apiece. Rachel Jordan, Blaise Stanicic, Laurel Laidlaw, Elizabeth Eicks, Shannon Simerly, and Rosni Strudwick netted the remaining six.

Junior goalie Anna Gosset allowed only two goals scored in the first three quarters of play, meanwhile blocking four. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson added two blocks in the fourth quarter.

"We did a good job and controlled the tone and tempo of the game," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer.

The Terps continued their winning streak against Iona, toppling the Gaels 8-2. Maryland's defense was anchored by Gossett in the cage, blocking eight while allowing only two goals scored.

Hopkins netted two goals for the Terps, and Christen Vagts, Jill Lau, Allie Houseal, Stanicic, Laidlaw, and Simerly scored one apiece.

Salyer noted the strong defensive effort of Vagts and freshman Sarah Ivry, shutting down key Iona players.

The Terps will face divison rival George Washington this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
