Maryland men's swimming and diving ended the 2006-07 regular season today with a dual meet in Charlottesville against the University of Virginia. The Terrapins fell to the Cavaliers on the men's side 124-115 bringing the men's overall record to 2-9 and conference record to 0-6.
To open the day, the Terps swept the 200-yard medley relay with the team of sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.), sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) swimming a 1:32.50 in the event.
In the 50 freestyle, the top finishers for Maryland were sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) and junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.) in fourth and fifth place respectively. Both swam season bests in the event; Closs swam a 21.85 and DiPiazza finished with a 22.02.
In the 100 free, freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.) led Maryland with a 48.69 for fifth place. Freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) swam a season-best time to lead the Terps in the 500 free (4:41.87).
Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (53.68) and sophomore Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.) led Maryland in the 100 butterfly with his season-best time of 52.66.
Cullen went on to lead Maryland in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a season-best time of 2:08.78. In the 100 breast, senior Tim Shepard turned in a season best of 58.75 for fifth. Senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) was the top finisher in the 200 individual medley (1:58.63).
Junior Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) led Maryland in the men's 3-meter diving competition with 271.43 points. Freshman Patrick Meck (Rockville, Md.) followed in second place, tallying 216.00 points. Hock finished second in 1-meter diving with 276.38 points and Meck placed third with 235.73 points.
Maryland finished the day with a season best in the 200 free relay to place first. Kim, Gray, Closs and Greene swam a 1:22.43 in the event.
The Terps are now set for post-season action at the 2007 ACC Men's Championships. ACCs will begin on Wednesday, February 21st and will run through Saturday, February 24th in Chapel Hill, N.C.
