The Maryland gymnastics team topped North Carolina at home Saturday, 194.025-193.750. This Senior/Alumni Night dual meet was the Terps' last home competition of the regular season.
In the first rotation, Maryland began on vault. Senior Angela Ferg led the Terps with a 9.825 score followed by Brandi George scoring a 9.750. Senior Rachel Colon competed on vault for the first time this season and notched a 9.675. North Carolina took a slight lead on Maryland after the first rotation, 48.500-48.225.
The Terrapins had a rough start on the uneven bars with Michele Brenner falling. The remaining five competitors hit their routines solidly. Freshman Allison Dama turned in Maryland's top score, a 9.750. North Carolina was strong on the vault and received a pair of 9.825 scores from Kara Wright and Christine Robella. The Tar Heels' lead on the Terps increased at the halfway point of the meet, 97.225-96.600.
Maryland fought back on balance beam in the third rotation to take the lead, 145.500-145.125. Brenner and George both tallied a 9.825 score and were followed by Colon earning a 9.800. North Carolina suffered falls on floor from both of their last competitors.
In the final rotation, Maryland was consistent with all competitors scoring between a 9.600 - 9.775. North Carolina closed the gap with their final three beam routines scoring at least a 9.800.
Brandi George's 39.025 all-around score topped North Carolina's three all-around competitors.
There was a three-way tie for first on vault among Ferg, Wright and Robella. North Carolina's Shawna Kelly scored a 9.775 on the uneven bars for first place. Tar Heel Christine Nguyen won balance beam with a 9.875. George won floor with a 9.775.
The three Terrrapin seniors, Rachel Colon, Angela Ferg and Marisa St. Louis, were recognized for their achievements at Maryland.
The Terps travel to local rival Towson next Friday for a tri-meet with Towson and George Washington. The meet is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Towson Center Arena.
