March 23, 2007

Final Stats

The Maryland gymnastics team finished its regular season at No. 11 Michigan on Friday; the Terps fell to the Wolverines, 196.075-190.975.

The Terps had a rough start on uneven bars with falls or major errors from four of their six competitors. Brandi George (Orlando, Fla.) turned in the team's high score of a 9.675. The Wolverines took the lead after a strong vaulting rotation of four scores of a 9.875 or higher, 49.300-46.450.

On the vault, Marisa St. Louis (Hales Corners, Wis.) got the team off to solid start, scoring a 9.725. Trouble on landings from the next few competitors prevented the team reaching their top scoring potential. Anchor Angela Ferg (Bel Air, Md.) closed the event by matching her season-high 9.850 score. Michigan was led by Becky Bernard earning a near perfect 9.950 score on the uneven bars as the team took over a three and half point lead, 98.575-95.000.

In the third rotation on the floor exercise, Ferg was a last minute scratch from the line-up. George hit the Terps best routine for a 9.80 score followed by matching 9.725 scores from Gretchen Kittelberger (Webster, N.Y.) and Michele Brenner (New City, N.Y.). Morgan Fishbein (Greenland, N.H.) and Rachel Colon (Brightwaters, N.Y.) fell on a tumbling pass which only allowed the team to tally a 48.050 event total. Michigan continued to increase their lead going into the final rotation, 147.500-143.050.

Maryland had two more falls from Brenner and Ferg on the balance beam. However, the rest of the team rallied. Colon gave her best performance of the meet, scoring a 9.675. Tossone scored a 9.775 and George scored a 9.80.

George won the all-around title with a 38.975 score.

The Wolverines swept the individual event titles. Winners included Maureen Moody and Katie Lieberman tying for first on vault with 9.900 scores. Bernard won the uneven bars and floor exercise (9.90). Huneth Lor took balance beam with a 9.875.

The Terps will regroup quickly and return to the gym to prepare for hosting the 2007 EAGL Championship on Friday, March 30 at 6:00 in the Comcast Center.
