COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Every Maryland baseball position player recorded at least one hit as the Terrapins cruised to a 27-0 non-conference victory Wednesday against Coppin State in eight innings. The Terps (12-5) rebounded from back-to-back losses as they took the victory in dramatic fashion, tying a school record with 25 hits. Meanwhile, the Eagles (0-16) left Shipley Field still seeking their first win of the season. The game was called in the middle of the eighth inning as both coaches agreed to end the day.
Freshman Nick Pearce (1-1) earned the victory after pitching a perfect fifth inning, while Eagles starter Teon Richburg (0-4) took the loss. Pearce was one of five Terrapin pitchers to see time, with starter Brett Curll allowing CSU's lone hit in the top of the fourth.
With every Terps hitter reaching base with a hit, Maryland's offense banged out 25 hits, tying a school record. In addition, the 27-run margin of victory sets a new all-time mark when Maryland has shut out its opponent.
Freshman AJ Casario led the offense with seven RBIs on a 4-for-6 day, highlighted by his grand slam to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Among the other offensive highlights, junior Steve Braun completed a perfect 4-for-4 day, driving in two runs while also reaching base twice with walks.
Senior Brandon Mise notched his first career hit, a triple in the fifth inning, and went on to finish 3-for-3 with an RBI. Other Terps making their mark in the hits column for the first time were freshman Ian Schwalenberg and redshirt freshman Mike Rozak, who each singled.
The Eagles could not get their offense going, however, as their lone hit came off the bat of first baseman Deshawn Daniel as he singled through the middle.
The Terrapins' 27 runs were the most they had scored since March 31, 1999, when they defeated Coppin State by a 28-2 margin at Shipley Field.
Maryland improved to 33-1 (.971) all-time against Coppin State, whom it will face again in two weeks at Shipley Field.
The Terps head to south Florida for their next test, as they will square off against ACC foe Miami for a three-game weekend set in Coral Gables. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. from Mark Light Field.
TERP NOTES: Maryland's contest against the Hurricanes Saturday night will be televised on a tape delay by Comcast SportsNet. The game will air Sunday, March 18 at 7pm ...
