College Park, Md. - Due to significant freezing on the softball field, the University of Maryland has decided to cancel this weekend's Terrapin Spring Break Invitational.
Just a day after the Baltimore-Washington area experienced 80 degree temperatures, winter roared back in Friday, delivering heavy rain, sleet and snow courtesy of a late season nor'easter which moved up the Atlantic coast.
In College Park, the precipitation fell in the form of a steady rain for most of Friday, but switched over to sleet and then to snow as temperatures fell in the late afternoon.
By Saturday morning, Robert E. Taylor Stadium was covered in a solid coating of ice and snow which froze the protective tarp to the field.
Maryland will resume play on Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary's, who was also scheduled to play in the Terrapin Spring Break Invitational. The Mountaineers received ten inches of snow on their campus in Emmitsburg, Md.
Mount Saint Mary's (3-9) hasn't yet played a game outside the state of Florida. They won three of five at the Blue and Gold Felsburg Memorial Tournament in Miami, Fla., and spent last weekend in Deland, Fla., at Stetson University.
The Mountaineers finished with a 31-25 record a year ago. Maryland has never lost to Mount Saint Mary's, with a 5-0 record all-time. The Terps swept the Mountaineers last season, 2-0 and 8-0.
Wednesday's forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the high 40's.
