Jackson's Grand Slam Lifts Terps to Sweep

March 25, 2007

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Amber Jackson belted a grand slam to highlight a 10-run eighth inning Sunday as the University of Maryland completed a sweep over Virginia with an 11-1 victory in the Terrapins' first Atlantic Coast Conference softball series of the season.

The victory lifted Maryland to 17-10 overall and 3-0 in the ACC season, while the Cavaliers dropped to 10-22.

Maryland's 10-run eighth inning included six hits and broke a 1-1 tie. The Terrapins had scored a single run in the second inning on a home run by Lindsay Klein, but Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Jennifer Wellborn, who also had a two-run single in the decisive eighth inning, finished with a 2-for-4 day to lead the Maryland offense. Meredith Nelles pitched three innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory and improve her record to 10-3.

Maryland travels to Georgetown for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
