Tallahassee, Fla. -
The Maryland Terrapins fell for a third time Sunday, losing 8-0 in five innings, as Florida State earned the weekend sweep of the Terps. Maryland fell to 19-13 on the season, while Florida State improved to 27-15.
The Noles jumped on Maryland quickly with three runs in the first. Monica Montez and Yuruby Alicart doubled for Florida State to drive in runs.
Terrapin pitcher Meredith Nelles fell to 10-5 with the loss, while Melissa May (8-2) earned the win for the Seminoles.
Down 4-0, Maryland's best scoring chance came in the fifth inning, when Meghan Booth singled up the middle, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. It was her first hit of the season.
Abbey Welch singled as well, and stole second on the next pitch, to place runners on second and third with no outs on the board.
One out later, Jenny Belak reached on a fielder's choice, as Florida State second baseman Veronica Wootson elected to throw out Booth at home plate. Belak stole second, but Keri Lounge struck out swinging to end the Terrapin threat.
Lounge, Belak, Welch, and Booth recorded hits in the game for the Terps.
Despite this weekend's setback, the Terps still find themselves in a much improved position from a season ago. At this point last year, Maryland found itself in a deep 1-5 hole.
With a 3-3 conference record this season and two consecutive home series on deck, Maryland is prime position to rebound.
