COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins play their last road games of the 2007 season this weekend when they visit ACC foe Virginia. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. All three games can be viewed live on ACC Select and heard on WMUC Sports.
Maryland is looking for its first ACC series victory since late March, when the Terps took two from the sixth-ranked Clemson Tigers in College Park. In that series, Maryland won the first two games, 4-3 and 4-1, before falling 5-0 on the final day of the weekend.
The Terps offense is led by junior outfielder Nick Jowers, who is batting .333. Sophomore third baseman Mike Murphy has been the top run producer, notching 34 runs batted in and five home runs. Senior shortstop Dan Melvin is tied with Murphy for the team lead in home runs with five as well.
In the bullpen, juniors Brad Taylor and Brett Cecil have been the top hurlers, with Taylor holding a team-best 2.51 ERA in 20 appearances, with one save. Cecil, who already holds the single-season and career save records at Maryland, has seven in 2007, along with a 5-3 record and 2.86 ERA in 25 appearances.
Maryland currently stands in sixth place in the ACC Atlantic Division, two games behind Boston College, and 11th overall in the conference.
SERIES HISTORY
Maryland trails in the all-time series, 73-83-1 (.468).
Last year, the Cavaliers swept the Terps in College Park, winning 6-0, 8-0, and 7-5.
The last Maryland victory came in 2002, a 10-3 decision at Shipley Field.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia enters the weekend with a 34-10 record, including a 13-7 mark in the ACC.
The top Cavalier hitter is Brandon Guyer, with a .404 average, 14 doubles, six home runs and 40 runs batted in, all team highs.
On the mound, Maryland will face off against Jacob Thompson (9-0, 1.54 ERA), Matt Packer (3-2, 3.38 ERA), and Sean Doolittle (6-3, 2.33 ERA).
TURTLE POWER
Maryland has had no problems hitting the long ball thus far in 2007, as the Terps have blasted 28 home runs in 44 games.
Sophomore Mike Murphy and senior Dan Melvin lead the team with five home runs.
The Terps are 14-7 this season in games they have hit at least one round-tripper.
In the second game of the year, Melvin blasted a 12th inning solo shot to give the Terps a 1-0 win over Gardner-Webb.
In the Saturday win at NC State, senior Jon Greenwich pinch hit a blast to deep left field to put the Terps ahead, 3-2, in the top of the ninth.
Against VCU, Spessard hit his first career grand slam as part of Maryland's 17-2 victory.
In the loss at Towson, Melvin homered twice, including a three-run shot in the top of the seventh to break open the game. He hit the other one in the top of the 13th.
UP NEXT
The Terps return home for a eight-game homestand to close out the 2007 regular season. Maryland hosts in-state foes Towson and Maryland-Eastern Shore in non-conference midweek action before a three-game set against No. 1 Florida State next weekend at Shipley Field.
