Gymnastics team wins President's Cup Award

April 30, 2007

The Maryland gymnastics team won the President's Cup award, announced Sunday at the 11th annual President's Cup Brunch, for the highest cumulative average over the past two semesters. The team's GPA was 3.42. They were awarded this honor for the third year in a row and the seventh time in the history of the award.

"The competition for the President's Cup Award has become increasingly more intense as teams stress the need for stronger academics. I am very pleased that our athletic department recognizes and applauds the academic achievements of our teams," said head coach Bob Nelligan. "Everyone knows the importance of competition, but many are unaware of how much hard work and pressure there is to produce academically as well. This award starts off every season for the team; our athletes are preparing right now to defend the challenge and are working hard to maintain this very prestigious award."

Senior Ashley LeVine won the Academic Achievement Award, which is given to the Junior or Senior with the highest cumulative GPA (minimum 3.0).

"Ashley LeVine has become a role model who in the face of adversity has continued to represent our women's gymnastics team by not only achieving academic excellence, but also represents the values and spirit of our athletic program," said Nelligan.

Senior Angela Ferg and junior Lindsey Bonomo won the ICA Community Service Award. Ferg also won the ACC Community Service Award.

"While finishing up her career Angela Ferg found both the time and energies to represent our program by influencing young children in her community service role," stated Nelligan. "It is great to see as Lindsey Bonomo enters her senior year that she is following the footsteps of her teammate and has been a great representative for our team in her community efforts. I thank both Ferg and Bonomo for taking time out of their busy schedules to give back to the community that has supported them throughout their college careers."

This is the team's highest GPA in seven years; their previous GPAs were:

2006 - 3.30
2005 - 3.23
2004 - 3.32
2003 - 3.29
2002 - 3.23
2001 - 3.29
