COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three University of Maryland pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout as the Terrapins defeated non-conference foe Towson University, 1-0, Tuesday evening at Shipley Field.
The Terps (24-24) scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they avenged a 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Tigers (18-23) earlier this season.
Junior Brad Taylor (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after a sparkling two hit, four strikeout performance in 3.2 innings of relief. Classmates Mike Sufczynski and Brett Cecil also contributed to the Terps' fifth combined shutout of the season.
Sufczynski started and allowed just two hits in 4.2 innings of work, while Cecil notched his eighth save of the year after retiring the final two batters in order in the ninth. For the Tigers, reliever Nate Curd (1-4) was saddled with the loss.
Five different Terrapins recorded base hits in the game, with sophomore Mike Murphy knocking in the game-winning run on a single in the sixth inning, after leadoff man Joe Palumbo bunted safely for a hit.
Palumbo was sacrificed over to second base by junior Steve Braun, and then scored on Murphy's liner to center field.
Maryland did not allow a Tiger hit in the final three innings of the game after taking the lead, as they evened the season series with Towson. The win opened the Terps' nine-game homestand on a positive note, snapping a six-game losing streak.
The Terps will face another in-state rival on Wednesday, as they host Maryland-Eastern Shore. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. from Shipley Field.
