COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland right-handed pitcher Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the Cal Ripken, Sr. League's most outstanding pitcher for the 2007 season on Thursday.
Swinson, a sophomore transfer from George Washington University who has yet to suit up for the Terps, went 4-1 with two complete games and a 2.03 ERA for Youse's Maryland Orioles. Additionally, Swinson accumulated an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 7-to-1, fanning 33 batters in 48 2/3 innings while waking only five.
Swinson went at least six innings in every start and held opposing batters to a paltry .213 batting average. Swinson did not allow a walk in four of his seven starts.
In a two-start stretch from June 24 to July 1, Swinson pitched 12 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out nine in the process.
Swinson was the co-pitcher of the week from June 8-June 17.
Last year at George Washington, Swinson, a Centennial High grad, went 5-6 with a team-best 3.97 ERA with 76 strikeouts and 29 walks.
Delaware State outfielder Eric Allen was the league's most valuable player.
